6 Principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

The main strategy behind ACT is to create psychological flexibility, in order to have a fulfilling life.

This article which was adopted from an online training (Mental Health Academy) discusses the functionality of the 6 core domains that define the model.

These are:

  1. Defusion - understanding and learning to accept words as words, and not the effect they have on us.
  2. Acceptance - allowing and making room for unpleasant thought and feelings.
  3. Being present - bringing awareness into the now by engaging all senses.  The only time frame we have is NOW.
  4. The observing self - is drawing attention to two processes occurring being the thought as it happens AND its observation.
  5. Values - reconnecting the self and what sort of person we want to be.
  6. Committed action - defining what effective action a person needs to take (based on their values) in order to have the life they want.

The article has examples, easy to understand explanations, and provides further information about the process.
