The Unwelcome Party Guest
The unwelcome party guest animation was published by Jo Oliver, illustrating a metaphor incorporating ACT principles.
Application -
Very often we have encounters with people that we might not like, get along with, or tolerate painfully. Our first instinct would be to distance, avoid and verbalise in some way. We can do all of these, some of them or none of them - this of course will be determined on the situation.
In fusing with the emotions and thoughts that appear in these situations, our responses can result in less than favourable outcome. Here, standing by the door and hoping that your neighbour will not turn up means that you are missing out on a great party!
At this point, you have a choice in dealing with the situation and your responses.
By choosing to accept your neighbour's eccentricities, the intensity of the situation is being defused; you are able to attend to your guests and your neighbour is not so painful as you thought (he was just lonely and wanted to chat).
We never really know the truth about people's reasoning....something to consider
